CFA Fire Conversations Video Now Online

Check out my latest video production documenting the CFA’s “Fire Conversations” project. It’s an exciting & innovative community development project which offers a new engagement approach for communities and agencies to share and learn together about fire and its implication to community safety. It was illuminating and fascinating for me to hear stories from people in high risk areas about their relationship to fire and fire preparedness. I hope you enjoy viewing it!

         Luminessence Films
‘Shining a Light on Sustainability’~April 2011

Luminessence Films is a Surf Coast based video production house dedicated to providing quality product for the environment, community and health sectors. I use high definition video recording allied with innovative and creative post production techniques.

As Producer and Director of Luminessence, I feel truly blessed to be living in such a beautiful natural environment and my surroundings provide me with a constant source of creative inspiration.

Like so many of us I am deeply concerned about the enormous challenges we and precious ‘mother earth’ faces as a result of climate change. I see it as my duty and responsibility to stay well informed of all the debates and issues around the subject of climate change & sustainability. I believe it is up to all of us to change the way we live right now, so that we can start to take care of the planet and ourselves. I am a committed advocate for the promotion of living a simpler and more sustainable lifestyle. If we can make this transition and encourage others to do the same then there will be a bright future for us all.

I see video as a powerful educational and promotional tool to inform people about these important issues. Here are some recent examples of my work:

MAV
Last year I produced a DVD for MAV (Municipal Association of Victoria) entitled “Councils & Communities In Transition”. The video documents the delivery of a CACIT (Councils & Communities In Transition) workshop at Baw Baw Shire Council. It features facilitator Andrew Lucas from “Transition Consulting”, a Geelong-based business that delivers Transition Town, peak oil, climate change and permaculture design education workshops and presentations. Andrew explains how important these awareness-raising workshops are in bringing council and community together to tackle the issue of climate change. We hear from the Mayor, Adam Tyson, who tells us that Baw Baw Shire has an active sustainability network and the highest rate of organic farming of any Shire and that the workshops help to keep the dialogue and collaboration going with community. We also meet a local member of ‘Transition Baw Baw’ Kim Musgrove, who enthuses about the value of the workshops and also tells us about the exciting sustainability activities and events taking place in the local region. So this DVD touches on important environmental issues and proves to be a valuable tool for both MAV to promote its ‘CACIT’ program and for Baw Baw Shire to showcase the innovative sustainability work it is doing.

DSE
I then went on to produce a video for DSE (Department of Sustainability and Environment) entitled “Developing a Local Government Environment Strategy”. The purpose of the video was to promote their Local Sustainability Accord program, which helps fund local councils to develop environment strategies. The DVD showcases the work of Ararat City Council and includes interviews with participants involved in the preparation of their Strategy. The interviews were filmed on location in Melbourne, Ballarat, Ararat and surrounding areas at state government & local shire offices, a sheep farm, a building site, a private home & Lake Wendouree in Ballarat. So a lovely mix of unique locations and characters were captured on film. This video proved to be a useful educational and promotional tool for DSE. It was distributed amongst local government networks at a workshop in Seymour not long after its production.

Global Land Repair
Earlier this year I was hired to document a permaculture installation on a private farm property in Gippsland Victoria for ACT-based tree planting business, Global Land Repair. The purpose of the video was to showcase the regeneration work completed by GLR on a one hundred acre paddock in Rosedale. Footage was taken both on the ground and from a light aircraft in the air (see below), illustrating the swale building and tree planting work completed on the property. Nick Huggins, Permaculture Design Consultant and manager of the project, tells us in a series of interviews about the value of swale building and tree planting and how it will contribute to a healthier, more fertile and sustainable landscape for trees to grow in and soil to regenerate. This video material will be uploaded onto the Global Land Repair website for potential clients and anyone else interested in permaculture principles and processes, to view. So again, a useful promotional and educational tool for this business to use to spread the word about how we can improve the state of this planet. Their mission is as follows: “Knowing that most of the degradation of earth, land, water & air can be repaired by trees, our mission is to instigate and inspire the planting of as many trees as possible on planet earth…”  A worthy mission indeed!

As Producer and Director of Luminessence Films I am passionate about shining a light on the interdependency of the individual, the community and the environment. I believe we have a responsibility to care for each other and the planet. This belief, together with the knowledge that storytelling is healing and empowering, drives my commitment to ‘bringing stories to light’. Film is the medium through which I achieve this vision as I believe that capturing people on camera who are telling their story and standing inside their passion is a catalyst for change. I hope by producing these DVD’s I am contributing to a change in thinking and action around this critical issue. I look forward to continuing to work on environment/sustainability related video product.

Luminessence Films offers clients a range of video product including documentary, promotional, educational and training DVD’s. Luminessence can also provide high quality recordings of one-off events such as community forums, workshops and conferences.

Latest News from Luminessence Films HQ

2012 has started off with a bang with some fabulous projects on the go and more in the pipeline! Its going to be a busy year for Luminessence!

Volunteering Geelong Documentary
I am currently working on a really exciting documentary film with the organization "Volunteering Geelong", documenting the work they are doing with a whole bunch of Neighborhood Houses in the local region. The project is called “Best Practice in Volunteer Management in Neighborhood Houses in the Barwon South Western Region” and aims to help houses improve and build on their volunteer programs. I know from my experience in community development, how challenging it is to manage a volunteer program; and how important it is to support, train and empower volunteers, as they are without a doubt the backbone of Neighborhood Houses. I am also excited by the fact that a key outcome of this project is that Community Houses will be supported and resourced to become demonstration models of best practice in volunteering for other volunteer-based organizations in their communities. This is a fabulous example of capacity building and something that I am very happy to be in a position to promote. The project is at the half way point and we have already captured some great footage of workshops, interviews with key stakeholders and neighborhood houses going about their daily business of catering to the needs of their communities. At the end of the process I look forward to delivering an engaging and valuable educational and promotional tool for "Volunteering Geelong" and the Neighborhood House sector.
